What Is an FDM (Forward Deployed Marketer)? A New Marketer Role from Strategy to Execution in the Age of AI
Introduction | Two businesses at ORIGAMI Inc.
ORIGAMI Inc. was founded on September 1, 2026. The company takes overseas brands into the Japanese market, and it does the marketing that growth requires.
The business has two main pillars.
The first is taking overseas brands into Japan.
We acquire the right to sell an overseas brand in Japan, and we carry the work from import through marketing, sales channels, and sales promotion.
We do not simply import a product and resell it. Our core business is growing the brand in the Japanese market as our own business.
The second is marketing as an FDM (Forward Deployed Marketer).
For the growth of companies in Japan, and for overseas brands entering the Japanese market, we take marketing from strategy through execution.
When an overseas brand is entering Japan on its own, for example, we do not have to become the sales agent. We can take the marketing for the Japanese market as a specialist.
What the two businesses share is FDM expertise: not only drawing the strategy, but carrying it out ourselves and connecting it to growth.
This article introduces FDM, the new marketer role at the center of the second business.
What an FDM (Forward Deployed Marketer) is
An FDM is a specialist who works deep inside a client's business and organization, and who takes marketing across strategy, execution, operations, and improvement.
The idea comes from the FDE (Forward Deployed Engineer), a role that has spread through the technology industry.
An FDE goes into the customer's workplace and implements technology and systems against the actual work.
An FDM applies that approach to marketing.
On August 26, 2026, Hakuhodo introduced the FDM as a next-generation role.
On October 14, 2026, Dentsu group companies in Japan announced that they would begin FDE and FDM skill development for about 3,000 people.
Large companies in advertising and marketing are starting to train people who connect strategy and execution.
The point of an FDM is not to stop once the strategy has been proposed. It is to make that strategy executable in the business, and to connect it to results.
How an FDM differs from a traditional marketer, a CMO, and a consultant
In marketing, the people who plan and the people who execute are often separate roles.
A consultant writes the strategy, an advertising agency runs the ads, and a production company builds the website.
Each has real expertise. What can be missing is someone who crosses the whole program and pushes execution toward the growth of the business.
An FDM closes that gap between strategy and execution.
| Role | Primary responsibility |
|---|---|
| Marketing consultant | Analyze the problem, set the strategy, and recommend improvements |
| Agency and media operator | Execute and optimize advertising and individual tactics |
| CMO | Strategy, organization, and investment decisions for marketing as a whole |
| FDM | Work deep in the business and turn strategy into concrete tactics and systems |
The table is a way to understand the roles. Actual scope depends on the company and the contract.
An FDM does not replace existing marketing roles.
The work is to understand each specialty, combine the people and the technology the work needs, and move strategy into execution.
Looking back, the work was already FDM
Keii Nagamine, Representative Director of ORIGAMI Inc., has worked across marketing strategy, advertising operations, SEO, website improvement, data analysis, CRM, and content.
Share the business problem with the leadership, design the strategy, and carry out the work it requires.
Sometimes that means working with specialists and outside partners, and repeating the improvements until the result shows up.
That is how the work has gone.
Looking back, the marketing she has practiced is what an FDM does.
One marketer, though, could cover only so much.
Marketing needs more than a strategy. It needs creative production, data analysis, systems, advertising operations, and other specialties.
What is changing that limit is the advance of AI and AI agents.
AI and AI agents brought the FDM role within reach
Generative AI and AI agents have widened the work a marketer can carry out directly.
Market research, competitive analysis, content, data analysis, CRM, workflow automation, and building a website: work that used to be split across several specialists can now be taken on with AI.
AI agents, in particular, do more than answer a question. They can use several tools and systems, and they can carry out a stretch of a process.
A marketer can therefore design the strategy and also build the system that executes it.
AI does not make anyone able to do everything.
It is not magic. One person still cannot do every specialty, alone, and do it perfectly.
Some work needs a specialist's judgment. Some work depends on conversation between people, and on experience.
Judging the output of AI, and using it well, still takes the marketer's own knowledge and judgment.
Even so, with AI and AI agents in hand, the FDM way of working, long treated as an ideal, is becoming practical.
More marketers will use this technology to work across strategy and execution.
Writing about the FDM role, starting in August 2026
On August 31, 2026, Keii Nagamine wrote on X (formerly Twitter) about the FDM as a craft.
The post looked at her own role as a marketer, focused on the idea of an FDM, and described what defines it.
The post on X from August 31, 2026
The next day, September 1, she founded ORIGAMI Inc. From the day it was founded, the company used the FDM title and began a business that takes marketing from strategy through execution.
The idea of an FDM existed before the company was founded.
We do not claim to have coined the term.
What matters for this business is that we were already focused on the FDM in August 2026, and that from our founding in September we have held it up as our own craft.
We will keep publishing the practice and the findings of a woman working as an FDM, and we will work on recognition and development of this craft.
An FDM is not asked to do everything alone
An FDM is not asked to finish every marketing task alone.
The work is to understand the business problem accurately, decide what has to be done, and combine the people and the technology required to produce a result.
Leave to AI the work AI can do. Where a specialist is needed, work with one.
The marketer looks across the business and moves decisions and execution forward.
What matters is not which tasks you can perform. It is what you can make happen for the growth of the business.
ORIGAMI Inc. will keep growing overseas brands in Japan as its own business, and it will bring what that practice teaches back into the FDM business.
Cross marketing and technology, and connect strategy to execution.
That is the FDM we are building.
